Technology - sometimes we can't figure out where we are in the love/hate relationship! I'm sure you will be able to utilize some helpful technologies as you assess the green situation within the low-income housing domain; or at least assess where you find the use of "green" in the love/hate spectrum. Thanks for all of your thoughtful insights - keep up the work on herleed, I love your perspectives. Good luck with the re-entry!

Great blog - by making sun and wind standalone options, rather than "alternatives", we might just really see the options in a different way - as a "new" source rather than a fix to the "foreign oil dependency" as politicians like to point out. In any transformation, it's new thinking versus repairing existing thinking that rules! With the sunny and windy days of autumn that we have been enjoying in the Bay Area - just imagine the possibilities!

I think the interesting thing to ask here is, what would it take to GET Americans to change their behavioral patterns? It comes down to incentives. If you hit them in the pocketbook, that's often the most effective means... and it's here that government can play a huge role. Subsidizing innovative technologies so it can be cheaper to "do the right thing" rather than more expensive. Or taxing the behaviors we are trying to discourage. It worked in Europe... make gasoline $5/gallon and people drive smaller cars, and fewer miles. We saw it last summer, albeit briefly, when gas spiked to $4 a gallon.

Yes, coal always leaves a warm place in our house, but "clean coal" is an oxymoron. Thank you for informing me of this possible way of containing the dirty coal emmisions, and sending it deep into the earth were it first exisited. Ashes to Ashes.

Your comments remind me of reading "Punished by Rewards" by Alfie Kohn when he talks about the fact that rewards kill interest and the intrinsic desire to do something. Changing people's mindset and attitudes must come from the realization and consciousness that change is needed and will bring a positive effect. In "Consious Evolution" Barbara Hubbard talks about the idea that we need to transcend our self-centered consciousness and see how we're all connected to the "larger whole." When we do this, we can take responsibility for our contributions to air, water pollution; carbon emissions; species extinction--global warming. But if we see ourselves as somehow "separate" from the whole, society, the planet--then we don't tend to see or take responsibility for how we might be harming the planet. I think one approach is to approach resolving these complex issues avoiding either/or thinking and instead approaching a solution with raising consciousness about how powerfully individuals can contribute to "change" and how great an effect the individual has on the "whole," but they must see that they are not "separate from" but part of the solution and the greater issue.
